IKZ publication selected as an “Editors' Pick”

The latest publication by IKZ researcher Moritz Badtke with the title “Efficient room temperature continuous wave laser operation of Tm:YLF around 820 nm” was selected as an “Editors' Pick” by the editors of the journal “Optics Letters”. Less than 5% of all papers in journals published by Optica receive this recognition to emphasize high-quality content.

[Translate to English:]

Left: Laser characteristics of the new laser at different transmission levels of the output coupler mirror. Right: Laser spectrum at different output coupling levels.

Moritz Badtke is pursuing his doctorate in the research group “Center for Laser Materials (ZLM)” under the supervision of PD Dr. Christian Kränkel. For his work, he is using special fluoride crystals that are developed in the “Fluoride Growth” working group headed by Dr. Hiroki Tanaka at the Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ).

The aim of his doctoral thesis is to investigate new materials and laser transitions for lasers at new - particularly visible - wavelengths. In the selected paper, he shows for the first time in theoretical considerations and practical demonstration that in fluoride crystals doped with small amounts of trivalent thulium, ground-state lasing from the excited 3H4 multiplet is possible even at room temperature in a wide wavelength range around 820 nm. In future, this new approach could offer a more cost-effective and powerful alternative to the currently frequently used but expensive titanium-sapphire lasers, as the new laser can also be excited with laser diodes, which could make the application much simpler and more efficient.
